Review – The Lego Movie
I went to see the Lego Movie this morning with my eight year old son. We both laughed out loud at it. A lot! It was seriously funny for most of the movie, some of it was slapstick and some of it was pretty geeky side jokes. Either way we had a whole lot of fun watching it. As the theme song goes, 'Everything is Totally Awesome!' The premise of the movie is a pastiche on the ancient prophecy tale where a hapless youth discovers he is the chosen one a little earlier than he's ready to deal with it. A mentor sees him through it and good triumphs over evil in the end. In the case of the Lego movie this sees a standard construction worker (Emmett) become the master builder who will save the Lego universe from the…
CLWG December 2013 Meeting
Alexander and I went along to today's session of Chestnut Lodge Wargames Group in Anerley. Despite the engineering works we still got there in time to take part in both sessions, although we nearly missed Brian Cameron's Weird War Two. Weird War Two Captain Britain (Photo credit: Rooners Toy Photography) Captain America was the movie of this game, which has been played many times by CLWG (and others) and it is a regular favourite. All it lacks, according to Alexander, is a Green Lantern character, and perhaps a mention for Bucky on the Captain America card! We joining in with Jon Casey as the Americans and we more or less quietly stayed out of the way and developed our lightning spitting Tesla Cannons just in time to use them to shoot down the Italian Spaghetti Foo flying saucers. However the…

Book Review – Tintin and the Black Island
The Black Island (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Somehow Tintin passed me by as a kid. The books were there in my local library alongside the Asterix ones, but I never wanted to check them out and read them. No idea why that was. However, my seven year old son did want to read them, probably because he saw the movie first. So having devoured The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure he wanted to read the rest of Tintin. So I took him to the library and we borrowed Tintin and the Black Island. It is an entertaining and engaging story. Tintin is an action hero and despite the setbacks he saves the day. It isn't all action though, there's loads of humour all through the book, almost every page has at least one gag, many of which are…

Proud Parent
Alexander's first proper parents evening at school was last night. He got a glowing report, the teacher actually said "it is a delight to have him in my class". All good stuff. He is a good all rounder, knows his words and numbers (already past the reception expectations), and leads other children in play and other activities. Teacher was quick to point out that leadership was very gentle and not domineering, but effective. Let's hope he stays this way for the rest of his school time (and life too).

Choi Kwang Do
I've just done my second introductory session of Choi Kwang Do at the Ellis Academy of CKD in Redhill. I'm looking forward to lots more sessions and getting fit again. Image via Wikipedia Although I can tell that I've done more exercise in the last two days than in a long time I don't feel wiped out or punished. The form of exercise is pretty natural and follows the way we move anyway, so lots of sweat, a feeling of burn during exercise, but not torture. An ideal way for the office bound fatboy to get back into shape! Another thing that makes it attractive are the people at EACKD. They are very friendly, keen to show and explain and they have a sense of humour which makes it fun to train rather than seriously competitive (although they do all…
