Garden Bookshelf – Bookshelves Abound = #Shelfie 03

I thought I'd mix it up with a Shelfie of my Garden Bookshelf. As mentioned in the previous posts, there are books all around my house, even in the garden.  When it comes to keeping it fresh, the air doesn't get much fresher than around the Garden Bookshelf! Garden Bookshelf The Garden Bookshelf is in my potting shed. The books share a makeshift shelf with fertiliser, tomato food and some pavement chalks. There are also other odds and ends accumulated by the occasional gardener. Gloves, secateurs, twine, seeds, linseed oil, wd40, tins of nikwax. You name it and it's probably on the Garden Bookshelf or within a few feet. The books are primarily reference books we've picked up in charity shops. They're all related to things that we grow, or have tried to grow. One or two are of things…

Cinnabar Moth

As mentioned earlier, there's rather too much going on right now to read books and review them, so here's a picture I took in my garden yesterday of a Cinnabar Moth (I initially mis-identified it as some sort of butterfly). One thing that is worth mentioning is that there are two sets of wings, and the lower set is completely red. You can just see them in the middle of the picture. When the moth flies it looks way more red than black, in fact I was surprised when it landed that the wings weren't completely red.  Cinnabar Moth in North East Surrey May 2015 (photo: James Kemp) English: Caterpillar of Cinnabar Moth Cinnabar Moth on a Ragwort. 480921 (Photo credit: Wikipedia) This is the first time that I've seen one of these, although I've seen the caterpillars a number of…

A Hole in the Garden!

I got home this evening to find a barrier across the front door and a hole in the path between the drive and the door (I was able to get in because they'd helpfully laid the paving flags on the grass round the barriers). Turns out the chaps replacing the gas mains couldn't get in touch with us (they claimed) to tell us what they wanted to do, so they just dug the hole anyway. I am pretty unhappy at how this has been done (although I would have consented if anyone had bothered to ask). The drive is covered in mud and the hole isn't that well protected given that I have an inquisitive four year old. Nothing I can do about it now, other than perhaps take a shovel and fill it in. Not only that, there is…

Peas & Onions

Alexander and I spent some time in the garden on Saturday, for the first time in weeks it hasn't been either raining or frosty. We pottered around a bit, mostly playing with his little house and some time in the potting shed. Saturday Planting In the potting shed we took the eight chilli seedlings and put them in separate pots. Two went into a pot outside (the weakest two, I don't expect them to survive but thought that they ought to have some chance. They are in a pot with some broad beans planted in it (although no sign of the broad beans yet, the frost and snow has probably delayed them coming up). Two of the others, including the biggest one, were put into pots and then into a propagator in the potting shed. The weather forecast is pretty…

More Morning Frost

Last couple of morning's have been decidedly chilly with a coating of frost on the ground. Looked like it might have snowed very briefly overnight on Monday, but only evidence was a smattering on the top of the car.
