Ubuntu Server Migration Plan
I'm thinking of buying a new computer to replace my old Pentium III which acts as a server for all my web and e-mail etc. It is starting to show its age and creaks a bit under the load. So I've got a candidate for a replacement for it, an Acer Revo 3610. So far I've found this thread on Ubuntu Forums: migrate ubuntu server. The key bit that is helpful is the command to find out what is installed on the server: Code: dpkg --get-selections > SomeFileName you'll get a list of everything installed on your old server. If you then take that file and remove the trailing spaces/status and run: Code: sudo apt-get install < SomeEditedFileName you'll have apt-get installing and configuring everything that was on the old server. A Hole in the Garden!
I got home this evening to find a barrier across the front door and a hole in the path between the drive and the door (I was able to get in because they'd helpfully laid the paving flags on the grass round the barriers). Turns out the chaps replacing the gas mains couldn't get in touch with us (they claimed) to tell us what they wanted to do, so they just dug the hole anyway. I am pretty unhappy at how this has been done (although I would have consented if anyone had bothered to ask). The drive is covered in mud and the hole isn't that well protected given that I have an inquisitive four year old. Nothing I can do about it now, other than perhaps take a shovel and fill it in. Well, it looks like I can't find any other blog clients that work for me. Not even sure that this one would work if the machine isn't connected to the internet. So I think I'll just try and use this and start posting stuff about the games I've been playing recently.

Well this client seems to work in connecting to the server in a way that the others I have tried didn't. It isn't as richly featured as I might have liked. However it works, which has to be the most important of all features in any

Perhaps a fitting subject line, but in fact I'm testing out an offline blog posting app called 'drivel', so this is telling whether or not it can connect up to the webhost and get this short article onto the web!
