Unbroken Fire by Anne Wheeler My rating: 5 of 5 stars Unbroken Fire is the sequel to the awesome Asrian Skies by Anne Wheeler. You really need to read Asrian Skies before embarking on Unbroken Fire. It's not that Unbroken Fire won't be a great read, but that Asrian Skies is too, and it's way better if you read them in the correct order! In my review of Asrian Skies I compared Anne Wheeler to Ann Leckie and Elizabeth Bear. This sequel is even better than the first one, and I stand by that comparison. Anne Wheeler is a really talented author, and she crafts amazing multi-dimensional stories with multiple twists. Lit By Another Star [NaNoWriMo 2017] [Sci-Fi]

(photo credit: James Kemp) Thanks to everyone that voted on what I should write for NaNoWriMo 2017, the winning result was the novel I planned for last year, which I've re-titled 'Lit by Another Star'. It seemed poetic as a title, and also didn't have anything else that conflicted when I googled it. I've also chosen a primary point of view character and done some more planning. What would we take to settle new Colonies?
I've written about motivations for sending new colonies on starships to settle earth like planets on other star systems. Astronomers have found thousands of these, so assuming that we don't wipe ourselves out before we develop the technology, one day we'll land on planets lit by another star. Technology for New Colonies First some assumptions. Planets we settle are in the Goldilocks zone and have breathable atmosphere. We can travel faster than light (either Einstein was wrong, or there's some alternative dimension or something) There are people with both money and motive to start new colonies With that, what technology do we take with us to start new colonies? Bear in mind that a lot of common tech is constrained by its history and the pre-existing infrastructure. On the new colonies there won't be any infrastructure, so there's more freedom…

Eric Olafson: Midshipman by Vanessa Ravencroft My rating: 3 of 5 stars This is the ninth book in the Eric Olafson series, which I hadn't realised when I agreed to read and review it. I'd been fooled by the Midshipman part of the title and had mistakenly thought it was the first of a series rather than the ninth! Eric Olafson: Midshipman Overall I enjoyed the book, and there were some excellent aspects, it had me wanting to keep reading it once I'd got about half-way through to see how it finished. As you'd expect there's a deep background to the universe that Eric Olafson: Midshipman is set in. Very little of this is explained, but it made sense.
